OVERDRIVE APP NOTES
Installation Notes
Overdrive 2.7.2 macOS/M1 Support
2.7.2 is a free update. It works on macOS through to Catalina (10.15). It works on Monterey (12.x) both Intel & M1 (in Rosetta mode). It does not work on Big Sur (11.x).
A future M1 native version of Overdrive may become available for Monterey and beyond; it will be a purchased new license — not free and not an upgrade.
Installing the Latest Epson Printer Drivers
If you are using Mac OS 10.15 (Catalina or later), you must use Overdrive Rev. 2.7.2 and the latest Epson Drivers.
When you update your Epson drivers, be sure to follow the instructions below for Resetting the Printer System.
Problems Installing an Overdrive 2.7.2 Update
If Overdrive 2.7.2 will not start on any OS (especially Catalina & Big Sur), download AppCleaner from FreeMacSoft. Run it, drop the current Overdrive on AppCleaner and remove all parts. Then install Overdrive 2.7.2 and be very sure to follow the instructions below for Resetting the Printer System before using Overdrive.
How to Reset Your System
Resetting the Printer System
Download and install Epson's latest driver for your printer from epson.com. Epson's installer does not correctly replace old driver elements. You must Reset the Print System to completely update the driver.
To Reset the Printer Driver:
• Open the Apple System Preferences – Printers.
• Hold the Control key and click on the Printer List.
• Select the Reset Printers option.
• Once the Printer List is empty, reboot your Mac.
• Open the Apple System Preferences – Printers.
• Click Plus to Add a Printer
• Select your printer via the Bonjour connection.
• Close the Printer Info.
Next, reset Overdrive and create New ENVs:
• Quit Overdrive if it is open.
• Hold the Shift key and double click to Open Overdrive.
This will delete your existing ENVs.
• Make new ENVs in Overdrive.
Resetting Overdrive Software
This complete reset is rarely required. This will remove all existing ENVs and Jobs.
Please make sure you have the latest release of Overdrive.
• Quit Overdrive.
• Hold the Shift Key while double-clicking Overdrive to start it.
This will Reset Overdrive to clear up unusual problems.
Print Notes
Printer Margin Settings at the Printer
At the printer, make sure Front Panel – Margins is set to 3mm. The factory default is 15mm which is over 1/2" x 2 = 1".
Saving from Applications
Printing directly from applications is not recommended. Instead, save your files and drag-and-drop them on the Overdrive Job List.
From PhotoShop:
Save to a Tiff and drop onto the Overdrive Job List.
From Illustrator & InDesign:
Save to a PDF with the settings of:
• High Quality Print
• PDF Standard = None
• PDF Format = 1.6
Drop the PDF onto the Overdrive Job List.
Using Epson Advanced B&W with Overdrive
Complete the following in Overdrive.
• Hold the Option Key and click on the Environment list.
• Select New Environment (Advanced)...
• Set the correct Page Attributes for your paper type (Roll Paper Banner) or Sheet, and size.
• Make sure Color Matching is set to Epson Color Controls.
• At the Printer Settings change Print Mode to Advanced B&W Photo.
• Use the Advanced Color Settings to change the Color Toning and Tone (brightness) of the B&W print.
• At the Printer Settings also select the Media Type and Output Resolution – be sure to set the Finest Detail to ON as the last change after selecting the all of the other settings.
• Click OK to save. Set the Overdrive Page size as needed.
• Leave the Color (ICC) settings at their default settings for both Input and Output.
Be sure to click the Save As (bottom right of the current window) to keep this new Environment.
Custom RGB Profiles
Creating Custom RGB Media Profiles
Our Quick Start Guide covers creating an Environment. Once it's created (select the Driver paper type, resolution and set Finest Detail On) then simply turn the Overdrive – Settings - Color – Enable ICC OFF. Provided that the ENV is created new with Overdrive rev. 2.3.5 or later, then the driver's Color Management is being forced OFF by Overdrive.
Important: Do Not Print from an application like i1Publish to provide the RGB target. Save from i1Profiler-RGB (i1Publish) as a Tiff and drop the RGB Tiffs into the Job List.
• With Overdrive Color OFF, print a set of RGB Profile Target patches.
• Measure and create your RGB Media Profile.
• Drag & Drop the new RGB Profile on the Overdrive Job List (this will copy the new RGB Media Profile to the correct ColorSync folder).
• At the Overdrive – Settings - Color – turn ON Enable ICC.
• At the Color – ICC Output tab, select Custom and scroll through the list to locate your new media profile.
• Save the ENV and you're done.
Adding Custom RGB Media Profiles for use with Overdrive
If you are using the driver-based ICC profiles, they are already installed. If you want to use custom RGB media ICC profiles, you can drag & drop them on the Overdrive Job List. Overdrive places them in the correct ColorSync folder for you. Then at the Settings – Color – Output tab, you can select the Custom ICC Profile. Be sure to save your ENV to keep the changes.
